LSA MARKS DISABILITY PRIDE MONTH 2024
July was Disability Pride Month.
Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July to promote visibility, awareness, and acceptance of the disabled community. It serves as an opportunity to highlight the achievements of disabled individuals, whilst also raising awareness of ableism.
Ableism is the discrimination of someone because of their disability or medical condition.
This year’s Disability Pride Month theme, ‘We Want a Life Like Yours’ recognises the opportunities and experiences that disabled individuals are denied due to ableism. Accessibility barriers can prevent disabled people from participating in education, employment, or leisure to the same extent that abled-bodied individuals can, which can amount to discrimination.
As Disability Pride Month comes to an end, it is important to remember that disabled people face ableism year round. Legal Services Agency provides specialist legal advice, assistance, and representation to disabled people throughout Scotland. Through the Disability and Social Justice Project, we assist disabled people on a wide variety of legal issues, including disability discrimination.
We recently published our new Disability Discrimination Guide, which provides information and practical tips on making a complaint or legal claim for disabled people who have experienced disability discrimination from a service provider.
