LSA Celebrates Human Rights Day 2025

Human Rights Day is celebrated around the world on the 10^th of December every year. The date commemorates the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on the 10^th of December 1948 – one of the United Nations’ first major achievements, and the first recognition that human rights belong to every person, everywhere.

This year’s theme, ‘Holocaust Remembrance for Dignity and Human Rights’, marks 80 years since the end of the Second World War and the Holocaust – the events that sparked the creation of the United Nations and UDHR in the first place. The theme is a reminder of the profound impact the Holocaust had on the development of international human rights law, and of the devasting consequences that arise when inherent human dignity is denied and human rights are unprotected.

Reflecting on lessons learned, we look to contemporary human rights challenges. As debates about the future of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the Human Rights Act continue – it has never been more important to safeguard human rights and celebrate the positive change they’ve made possible.
