LSA and British Institute of Human Rights Celebrate 75 Years of ECHR

Legal Services Agency (LSA) is pleased to share the British Institute of Human Rights’ (BIHR) new ECHR 75^th Anniversary Zine, created to celebrate seventy-five years of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the real impact it has on people’s lives today.

Seventy-five years ago, on 4 November 1950, the ECHR was opened for signature by the Council of Europe. This powerful piece of legislation was designed to safeguard everyone’s basic rights and freedoms. In the decades that followed, people in the UK whose ECHR rights had been violated could take their case to the European Court of Human Rights, in Strasbourg. The Human Rights Act 1998 later brought these rights home and made it possible for individuals to assert and defend their human rights in the domestic courts.

The ECHR 75^th Anniversary Zine celebrates the many people who bring human rights to life every day – families, young people, community organisers, lawyers, campaigners, and individuals with lived experience who turn rights from words on a page into positive social change.

LSA’s work has been highlighted in the Zine in an article written by our Communications Officer, Amy McGilp. In the piece, Amy highlights how we use human rights law to challenge streamlined evictions – protecting individuals and families from homelessness.

We are grateful to the British Institute of Human Rights for spotlighting our work, and for their continued leadership in promoting and protecting human rights for all.
