In a recent answer to a parliamentary question by Hugh Henry MSP, Kenny MacAskill, Cabinet Secretary for Justice, stated that the Scottish Government provides direct funding to Victim Support Scotland to maintain a victims’ fund which we are told provides direct assistance to victims of crime. The Government will, Mr. MacAskill stated, be bringing forward shortly, within the Victims and Witnesses Bill, proposals for a victim surcharge that will require offenders to contribute towards an additional source of revenue to meet the immediate needs of victims of crime. Following this, the Government intend to consult on proposals for a new Scottish Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme.
LSA has no details on how Victim Support is managing this fund or on what the Government may be proposing for the future.
Interesting developments, however, and we will keep you up to date.
